You're playing with the big boys now

Today we are experiencing something new for London--a tropical storm!  It's kind of soothing listening to the rain, and London was entranced watching it from the window.  And it's kind of cool that Papa got to come home early from work!  But right now we're just hoping the creek out back doesn't flood over into the yard.  And post-poning the backyard camp out we had planned this weekend... Dan, aren't you sold on moving to the South yet??? ;)

The constant stream of raindrops has lulled everyone else in this house to sleep, and London's nap time has now morphed into everyone's nap time.  That's ok though, it gives me a little time catch up on blogging before we head out to celebrate National Doughnut Day at Krispy Kreme.

So, this post is kind of about my brothers.  I don't know if you heard, but they're quite the strapping young gentlemen these days!  It's always kind of weird for me to come home and see these boys who I will probably perpetually picture in my mind at 5 and 9 are actually 14 and 18.  And you know, going through puberty, and starting high school, or GRADUATING high school, and going to dances and winning awards and growing into teenagers who are rapidly becoming young adults.  Weird, am I right??  But at least they are still my awesome, funny, fantastic, dorky/nerdy little brothers.  Some things never change.

Here we have bachelor #1...just kidding, this is Ti before heading off to the 8th grade formal!
Ti is excited to be entering the great, wide, world of high school next fall.  He's still trying to decide on which extra-curricular activities he wants to do--cross country and track like Hopey, or taking to the stage like Spicer-man.  Decisions, decisions.  Maybe he can be an overacheiver and do both??
He came home informing us that he created a new dance, The Titus.
While we're on the subject of Spicer and drama, we got to attend his ITS (International Thespian Society) Banquet.  As my father always says, "That's thespians, not lesbians." Bet you've never heard that one before, have ya??  Not only did we get to witness Spicer's great triumph in winning the award for "Most Enthusiastic" (for the third year running!), but we also had the pleasure of watching him perform.  I'm telling you, this kid is going to do great things.  Some day Spicer will be a household name!! And that'll show all the nay-sayers and doubters and bullies from his high school who I want to punch in the face.  Oops, sorry, did I get a little off-track there?  The point is, Spicer has the personality and the talent to fit that name, and I'm excited to see where he goes from here!
Spicer getting his cords for graduation.
Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya very much!

Accepting his award. "I'd like to thank the Academy!!"
Spicer and Ti also attended the Rose Prom (or the Mormon Prom).  I think they look quite dapper, what do you think?

Please note the subtle tie-change since his last dance!

Helloooo Ladies!

They grow up so fast!  And don't they both have incredible fashion sense for boys their age?? I'm always impressed.

You know you've reached adulthood when you're big enough to give your own father piggy-back rides...
I'm so grateful to be able to come home and spend time with my family.  I love them so much and it is hard to be so far away.  Hopefully someday that won't be the case, but for right now I'm enjoying every second of the madness!

And just so you know, the women in our family are equally attractive. ;)

London's latest new word, "Papa!"  So she's enjoying North Carolina too.  Although she does still ask for "Dada" quite a bit.  We miss that guy!!

Blessing Dress

Waking up at all hours of the night has messed up my sleep schedule a bit, and I can't fall asleep.  That's OK because I couldn't wait much longer to share these!  London and I had a wee little photo shoot today.  Dan's Grandma Snow really wanted a picture of London in her blessing dress, and we didn't seem to get any of just her on her blessing day!  She's already grown a bit since we blessed her, but she still fits into that dress!  Good thing, because she is just beautiful in it.  Although I'm a bit partial to her...

London was an angel and slept through the whole ordeal.

London's Great-grandma Vacc made the beautiful blanket I used as a back drop.

And her Great-Grandma Snow made her these precious booties.

Thanks to Grandma Carrie for giving London this gorgeous dress!

Tiny hand!

Gettin' my craft on.

Those of you who know me well know that I am not a crafter.  I've always struggled when it comes to scissors, glue, and especially sewing machines.  So when I tell you that these two lovely wreaths I made are simple, I really, really mean it.  Like, they couldn't be easier.  And they're also way cheaper than if you were to buy something similar at the store, and I'm not even embarrassed to hang them up.  AND I've even gotten compliments on them!  I bet you're so excited to learn about them.

Wreath #1
My inspiration for this was found via Pinterest.  However, the wreath it linked to wasn't a how-to, but one which I could purchase on Etsy for 40 buckaroos, if I so desired.  I did not desire, because I figured I could probably make something pretty darn similar for much less moolah.  This wreath is the easiest thing ever to make.  I didn't take how-to pictures because I made this around 11 PM one night while Dan was out of town last week and I couldn't sleep.  But here are some instructions if you're interested.

What you will need:
  • A wreath form.  I used a straw one because it was cheaper than the styrofoam/wire ones, and it gives the wreath more of a harvest feel, which is autumn-appropriate.  The straw wreath was $3 or $4 at Jo-Ann's.
  • Tulle.  I bought about a yard each in different Fall colors.  Each yard was $1.99.  I used almost all of it to make this wreath.  If you'd like a fuller wreath, I'd recommend getting more.
  • Seasonal embellishment.  I saw the leaves and berries in the clearance pile at Michael's.  89 cents!  Yay!
  • Ribbon.  I got this awesome Fall-themed ribbon at Michael's, also on sale.  It was a dollar.
Total cost: $13 and one hour of my time.  Much better than $40.

How to:
  1. Cut your tulle into strips, about six inches.  I wasn't really stressed out about getting them perfect, so some are wider than others.  I cut my strips lengthwise and then folded them in half, to make the wreath a little fuller.  But really you can make your strips however you'd like.  I won't judge you.
  2. Tie the strips onto the wreath.  I decide to do mine in a pattern, alternating the lighter and darker colors: brown, orange, purple, gold.
  3. Add your embellishment.  I just stuck the stem of the leaves through the tulle.  Feel free to hot glue if that's a better option for you.
  4. Tie on ribbon to hang.
My door can now keep up with the Joneses.  I'm pretty sure everyone in our building has a cute wreath on their door for every month.  I can't have a bare door!
P.S.  One more thing I like about this wreath: you could make one for any time of the year, just change out colors of tulle.  I have a friend at work that is thinking about making one for Christmas.

My next wreath was also super simple.  I have a link to a how-to here.

I followed that how-to pretty closely, except I decided not to dye my coffee filters in tea, because I figured if I kept this wreath white, it could change seasons.  I used the leftover tulle from my last wreath as a little embellishment.  It's just stuffed in there with the coffee filters, no glue.  That way I can pull them out and use something different for Christmas, winter, maybe even spring?? We'll see.  I like this wreath because I made it baby size.  It's so cute.  I also like that it took me less than an hour to make, with no frustrations involved!

So there you have it, my progressing homemaking skills.  I'm practically a prodigy.

Also, before I go, I just wanted to give a shout-out to my Grammie!  Remember those shoes I was pining for in my last post?  My grandmother sent me a check in the mail so I could get them!  Isn't she a doll?? And aren't these shoes gorgeous??

Thanks Grammie-girl!

P.S. I'm getting more and more excited for this holiday season, we'll be traveling for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year!  Fun times!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Best of times: finding out your little baby is going to be a girl!

Worst of times: finding the perfect pair of shoes you have been lusting over for months at Marshall's, and they're still too expensive.  Donations? Please?
Look at how perfect they are!! [via Atlantic-Pacific]
I'd still say the best outweighs the worst, and that's pretty dandy.
Getting oh so excited for the holidays!

It's hard being photogenic.

This one time in high school, a boy told me, "You're so photogenic."
I didn't take him seriously, because: A. He was saying this after viewing the photo on my school I.D.  B. He was jealous/a control-freak trying to woo me away from my boyfriend at the time.  C. He'd never seen my family try to take a picture.

Now tell me I'm photogenic, Mr. Poopsmith.

Isn't my mom's dress fabulous?

Almost...Hopefully my mom got some good ones...

My sister is super good looking.

Wuv...twu wuv.
P.S. Here is a secret: I wore this dress three Sundays in a row because I was in a different ward each Sunday.  Special thanks to Ross for providing me with a last minute Easter dress at ten o'clock the night before!

I wish I had money.

Kind of digging on this elephant bag from Baggu.

Isn't it precious? I'd be the cutest grocery shopper on the block!

30 Days of Blogging: Day 25

In my purse.

I'm kind of funny about purses.  I probably switch off which one I'm using once a month.  Currently, I'm on my Mickey Mouse Dooney&Bourke Grammie got me for Christmas.  This is the first brand name purse I've ever had, and probably the most "grown-up."

But no matter the purse I'm using, I probably have the same things in it.

The usual suspects:
My wallet.
My phone.
Chapstick.
A pen.
My thumbdrive.
Lotion.
Gum. (I'm out!)
My keys.
A book (Little Women at the moment--rereading it for bookclub).
My little notebook.

I also used to carry concealer/foundation, but I hardly ever actually used it, so it got booted to the curb.  As did my old camera.  My new camera can't fit all it's awesomeness in any of my purses now, which is ok.

While we're on the topic, I'd really like a big leather bag, with lots of compartments.  If you see a cool/cheap one, let me know. =]

30 Days of Blogging: Day 3

Circa 1994?
This is me on Halloween one year.  I don't know why, but most of the pics I have on my computer of me growing up are from Halloween.  I decided to go with the scarecrow costume.  Fun fact: my mom made my costumes for me every year.  Now that's love.  This paticular year I was the cutest little scarecrow east of the Mississippi.  I remember  I got to wear my costume to dance class, but the straw was itchy and bothered me. Oh well.

Can we just talk for a minute...

About all the modesty at the Golden Globes?  I was seriously floored by all the sleeves/lack of major cleavage on some of these gowns.  They make me wish we had a prom for grown-ups so I could wear them.  Except I probably don't have the bod to pull them off.

Sandra Bullock.  I just realized this dress is one-shouldered, but pretend it has sleeves on both sides, because I really like it.

Angelina Jolie.  She kind of looks like a skeleton in this, but I like the color.

I really like this one.

The top's a little low, but it's Hollywood, I'll take what I can get.

Obviously this is a little too "booby" to really be modest, but I love Scarlett and this dress is like a dream.
Maybe I should start my fashion blog again, now that I actually have time for it and stuff.

OhEmmGee

Lately, I've been missing my long hair.  I don't regret cutting it short, and I like it short.  ...I just miss the options of long hair, etc. (all the usual complaints after haircuts)...
BUT, today I came across a picture of Lily Allen (one of my style icons):
Yeah, we basically have the same haircut.

Needless to say, I'm back to loving my short hair.

Paranoid

I am always afraid that I am that annoying, weird girl that people avoid.  I probably think this because I used to be that girl.  No, really I did.  And I guess I still am, I've just developed better social skills as time has gone on (which still aren't that great).  It doesn't change the fact that I'm sometimes afraid people are nice to me out of pity.  Which is why it is always fun when someone that I admire for their confidence/fashion sense/intelligence/awesomeness gives me a genuine compliment.

Yesterday, this girl in my class turned to me and said, "You know your cute t-strap rainbow bead sandals?  Well, I liked them so much, I asked for some for my birthday, and I got them!  But I've only worn them on Monday/Wednesday/Friday, because I didn't want you to think that I was a copycat...because I really am!  But they're so cute!"

Ok, so maybe this was a compliment to my shoes, and not to me, but still.  It's the little things in life. =]

Lauren 2.0

I know most of you probably saw this on facebook, but my hair is gone!  I like it a lot, and even Dan said he likes it...he's just worried I'm not going to style it all the time and then it won't be as cute.  I'm not that worried about styling it, cuz basically I just have to blow dry it.  Which is going to be SOOO much easier/quicker than it was when I had long hair.

Also, I love the guy who cut my hair.  Brighton recommended him to me, and his name is Patrick.  Basically, he's awesome.  And he did an amazing job, no?

Before (in case you forgot what I looked like...)

After.  My eyes look weird in this picture, but oh well.

Reasons this weekend was awesome:

-I had no school on Friday, so my weekend was a whole three days long!

-Friday night, Dan and I went on an awesome double date with my cousin once-removed (...or second cousin?...long story), Autumn, and her boyfriend Devin.  We had a super fun time, even though the Mexican restaurant we were going to go to had closed (we just went to Pizza Pie Cafe instead).  Then, we went to the Nickelcade, and I almost won the jackpot on this speed demon game.  I just wasn't enough of a speed demon.  I did, however, almost hit an innocent couple in the head while playing the basketball game, all thanks to my awesome coordination and some super bouncy basketballs.

-Dan won both his soccer games this weekend!  I only went to one (on Friday--where I had an awesome political discussion with Lyse on immigration and history and other stuff).  It's ok though, cuz for the game I didn't go to, I went and hung out with him and his team at Wingers to watch a soccer game.  I'm so supportive!  (It helped I got to have some sticky fingers.)

-I am officially Queen of the Kitchen.

I made chocolate chip muffins from scratch for breakfast!  I was really worried they wouldn't turn out, cuz when I finished making the batter, I was like, "this looks a lot more like cookie dough than muffin batter..."  Then I realized I'd forgotten to add the milk...which you're supposed to add before you put in all the dry ingredients and the chocolate chips, but I guess it doesn't really  matter if you put it in last, cuz they were still delicious!

Recipe (From Williams-Sonoma)

Chocolate Chip Muffins
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
2 eggs, at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 cup milk
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners. In a bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.  In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the butter and 1 cup sugar on medium speed until creamy, about 3 minutes. Turn off mixer and scrape down sides of bowl.  Add 1 egg and beat until blended. Add the other egg and the vanilla and beat until well blended. Turn off the mixer and scrape down the bowl.  Add half of the flour mixture and beat on low speed just until blended. Pour in the milk and beat just until blended. Add the rest of the flour and the chocolate chips and beat until blended.  Fill each lined muffin cup with batter. Sprinkle the 1 tablespoon sugar evenly over the tops.  Put the pan in the oven and bake until the muffins are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean, 21 to 23 minutes.  Remove from oven, set on wire rack to cool for 20 minutes. Tip the muffins out of the pan onto the rack and serve warm or at room temperature.

Then for dinner I made homemade chicken soup and my Aunt Renae's rolls.  The rolls weren't as good as they are when Aunt Renae makes them, but practice makes perfect.  Also, new traditions I am starting:  every weekend I am going to make a breakfast from scratch, and every Sunday dinner we're going to have Aunt Renae's rolls.

Lion House Rolls (Aunt Renae’s Rolls)
2 TBSP yeast
2 cups warm water

Mix yeast and water and let stand for about 5 minutes.

Add:
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup softened butter
2 tsp salt
2/3 cup nonfat dry milk
1 egg
2 cups flour

Beat together until smooth.  This may take a few minutes…

Gradually add up to 4 more cups of flour until a soft dough is formed (I usually do 3 1/2.)  Knead until dough is smooth and elastic.  Place in a greased bowl.  Cover and let rise until double in bulk (about an hour.) Punch down and knead lightly then shape rolls.  Place on greased baking sheet and let rise until double (about 30 minutes.)  Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

A few notes (from Aunt Renae!):
·         For butter I usually just use whatever part of a stick I happen to have in my fridge.  It doesn’t have to be exactly 1/3 cup.  You can even leave it out if you want to…I don’t know why you would want to…trying to be healthy or something???
·         If you don’t want to use dry milk you can use 1 cup water and 1 cup milk in place of the 2 cups of water.  I like to use dry milk because I store it in my food storage and it is a good way to use it up and rotate it.
·         There are lots of ways to shape rolls.  The original recipe calls for dividing the dough into thirds, rolling each third into a circle and then cutting each circle into 12 pie shaped wedges, rolling each wedge crescent style.  I like to divide the dough in half.  Roll each half into a rectangle like you are making cinnamon rolls (about 12x16 inches.) Brush the dough with melted butter, then use a pizza cutter to divide the dough first length wise so you have two rectangles (6x16.) Then cut each into 8 pieces so that you have 16, 2x6 inch strips.  Then holding the strip of dough at one end I flip it so that it winds itself up. So you end up with 32 treasure chest style rolls.  If that doesn’t make sense, let me know…maybe you will have to come over and make them with me sometime J
·         I think they bake up better in glass pans.  I like the bottoms of the rolls to be a little bit crusty, and in a metal pan the bottoms stay soft.
·         I usually cover the rolls loosely with foil for the last few minutes they are in the oven so they don’t get too brown on top.

-This is lame, but I wore a new dress to church today, and I looked super cute!
