To Fresh Starts and Clean Slates

Back in 2012, in the good ol’ days when I blogged more than once a year...ahem....I remember reading one of my favorite bloggers sharing she would set a word as the theme for her year. I thought-- what a great idea-- and went with it. I haven’t been perfect with it every year since then, but looking back, I really love how a chosen word has inspired and pushed me through a year. Two of the first words I chose were joy and hope, which ended up being two qualities I needed most those two years and in the years to come. In contrast, last year I chose the word uplift, and had all these ideas on how I could serve others and make the world a brighter place. That all seemed great in the hopeful month of January, but in February my life took a sharp left turn when my father’s health suddenly and rapidly declined; and then life decided to go completely off-road into uncharted territory when my much-loved father passed away at the end of May. I had wanted to lift and brighten, but most of the year I found myself in the lowest and darkest places I had ever known. Instead of glorying in all that -I- could do, I watched in awe of what those around me could do. Uplift was definitely a theme for the last year, but not in the way I planned it. I learned how it feels to be lifted up from the depths of grief, only to sink back down again—and still have loving hands reaching down towards me, helping me through each step, waiting with me until I was ready.

I learned that even when we are at our lowest, we can still find ways to love others and serve them. In fact, when we are hurting, sometimes the best thing we can do is look outside ourselves. Love is not a commodity to be hoarded by misers. That precious little we feel we have left within us doesn’t disappear when we share it; it multiplies and fills us back up. And in the end, love is what lifts our heavy hearts.

As I was reflecting on what I most wanted for this next year, all I could think was how much I would like for things to SLOW DOWN. I can’t remember feeling so overwhelmed and inadequate and just plain tired in a long, long time. Last year, I had a New Years Resolutions list that was six pages long (no joke). The very thought makes me cringe. This year I am going to SIMPLIFY. I want all the extra distractions of life to fall away, so that I can focus on the things that really matter. First and foremost would be spending time and making memories with my loved ones. One thing I have thought about often since my father’s passing was how even though his life was so much shorter than it should have been, he made every moment count. He left a mark and an example for each and every one of his friends and family. We don’t know if we’ll be on this earth for another 50 years or if this is our last. I don’t want my time to be wasted. So 2018 is for making memories and treasuring those simple moments.

With an eye to simplicity, I only allowed myself to set two resolutions this year:

1. Be healthy.
2. Finish my novel

Of course I have smaller goals and plans on how to accomplish these, but (without sounding too melodramatic), I already feel weight and pressure lifting from me and it is freeing! While I still feel tired, I also feel ready to move forward. And after all the hiding I have done in the last year, it's about time.

Happy New Year! May this year be kind to us. And even if it isn't, let's carry on.

I’ve noticed that the word-of-the-year idea gets a bigger following each year. What’s your word and why?

My Past Words:
2012 joie de vivre (french phrase that means "joy of living")
2013 hope
2014 gratitude
2015 ——
2016 ——
2017 uplift
2018 simplify

Gwyneth's First Birthday

Our little Gwinnie-girl is one! I know it's cliche, but I seriously feel like I blinked and suddenly it's the end of the year and the sweetest little baby turned one. Gwen radiates kindness and joy. She is easy going, she loves to eat, and she loves her sisters. Balls, books, and little people are her absolute favorites, but she won't say no to a stray crayon on the ground either... Her favorite song is the intro to That 70's Show. (Yes, really.) Oh, and she likes her mom and dad alright too.

She has learned to climb up the stairs, and is getting pretty good at it. She hasn't tried to come down, she'll just sit at the top of the stairs and yell until someone comes and gets her. So hopefully she doesn't get any ideas about that too soon. She climbs up on anything she can, she can cruise along furniture, but still hasn't tried to stand up by herself, let alone take steps. But she is a speed demon when it comes to crawling.

The bathroom fascinates her, and we've all had to learn to close doors to the rooms we don't want her getting into. She is at that awesome stage where she loves to pull out everything she finds and stick it in her mouth. Her sisters are quickly learning that prized possessions need to be kept up high and out of reach. But they love her to death and are always trying to bring her toys and books that are more baby appropriate.

Gwen can say mama, dada, sister (she's only said this one a couple of times, but it refers to London and Juju), hi, bye, yup, and yay. Even though she doesn't know too many words yet, she is constantly chattering away to us. I love when babies start using inflection in their babble. They really are trying to tell you something, they just don't have the words yet. She points, she waves, she claps; the girl knows how to get her message across.

She switched to whole milk and the sippy cup this month, and eats basically anything you put in front of her. She eats three meals a day, sometimes with a snack in the after noon. She's still taking two naps a day (but they are getting shorter and every once in awhile she will just take one long one.) She was doing really awesome at night, but lately has been waking up once or twice. She goes right back down with a bottle or a binkie, and usually sleeps until 8 am, which in this house definitely counts as sleeping in. (Especially since Juliet wakes with the dawn!)

The word that pops into my head when I think of Gwinnie is joy. She is almost always happy, and she spreads it to everyone around her. Our home has been such a happy place since she joined, and just the thought of her makes me smile. We are so grateful for you, Gwinnie the Pooh! Happy Birthday!

Juliet Turns Three

Juliet is my sweet-and-sour little introvert. She promised me that she will stay three forever, but I think she is finding that a difficult promise to keep. She decided that three years old means you are a big girl, so she finally quit the bottles at bed time and started wearing big girl panties and using the potty.  This has been life changing not only for her, but for me too, and I think everyone is ten times better off for it! I would throw her a party just for those accomplishments, but she already had a pretty rockin' costume party for turning three.

She got a little overwhelmed at times during her party (like I said, serious introvert!), and so it may be the last one I throw her, but I think for the most part she had a good time. And any excuse to wear her Darth Vader costume is a good thing to her. ;)

We did mummy dogs, caramel apple slices with toppings, lots of sweets, orange snacks, and a special-request-pumpkin-shaped chocolate cake. We bobbed for apples, pinned the spider on the web, and had a costume contest. It was wild with so many of our friends over, but controlled chaos is just kind of part of being a parent at this point, so the more the merrier! Thank you friends for celebrating with us and being our family away from home!

Juliet has grown so much over the last year. She has overcome fears (like the ocean, making new friends, and being away from mommy), she has become more confident, and is even learning to dress herself and put her shoes on. She is still learning to channel her stubborness (ahem, will-power), in a more productive manner, but I think someday she will be a powerhouse.

I'm so proud of the sweetness, the determination, and the independence that this little girl has inside her. Happy Birthday, Juju!

Dental School Friends are Forever Friends!

One of the highlights of our year was having the Stephens come to visit. Mandy and Russell were some of our closest friends through dental school, and they are really more like family. We had such a great time while they were staying with us...you guys are coming back soon, right??

We were able to do a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, which is great for family fun, and the luau is always delicious! That Kelua Pork...and the sweet potato with coconut! THE TARO ROLLS!! We honed our fire dancing skills, spear throwing, hula dancing, and got our culture on. One of the things I love about coming here is that everyone really makes you feel like you're family. If you're on Oahu you need to save a day for the PCC. Look how much fun these kids had!

Quick stop on the way up to the PCC at Chinaman's Hat.

Juju practicing her fire dance.

London and Avonlea concentrate on their twirling.

Russell is ready to light his!

Time to throw some spears.

Gwen and I hang out during the boat parade.

Hawaiian Royal Court

We fit in as much beach time as we could. We spent an afternoon at Paradise Cove where we swam with sea turtles (and of course I did not take a single picture, so just trust me when I say it was awesome. ;)) And obviously we had to go to Lanikai, the best beach on the island. Every time we go here I have to pinch myself to be sure that living here isn't some sort of dream!

I could not get enough of Merrick's little swim diaper!! <3 br="">

Seriously!!

Mandy and Avonlea looking like models.

Merrick found the sand.

Gwen hung out in her personal baby beach cabana.

And Merrick kept her company.

Oh yeah, I was there too. ;)

We also headed over to White Plains Beach to catch some waves. We also got a surprise visit from a Hawaiian Monk Seal while we were there. He swam right up to our little spot on the beach and hung out in front of us the rest of the time we were there. It was very exciting to watch him loll about for an hour or so.

Dads and the big girls catching waves.

Mr. Seal washes ashore.

He decided to come a little further up shore.

View of Diamondhead and Honolulu from White Plains.

Juliet being lazy and catching a ride down the beach to the water.

And enjoying a snack after a wipe out.

London wanted her picture with the seal.

And so did Avonlea!

So cute!

We also went to the Dole Pineapple Plantation, which I hadn't been to since my family came here on vacation when I was a girl. It is so fun! We rode the train, explored the gardens, and indulged in some pineapple treats. (Shout out to Dole Whips!)

Baby pineapple!

I spy a Juliet!

Mandy and I even got to enjoy a Girls Night Out! Dinner and shopping and it was perfectly wonderful!

We love you guys, PLEASE come back soon!!!
